Lenny For Your Thoughts Anyta Sunday Books Reviews

Although I like a few of her other books better,Anyta Sunday has written another enjoyable book. I would have liked a lot more backstory to help me understand what motivated the characters to behave as they did. But the length of the story and the price , not to mention the past successful books made the decision to buy this one easy. Well done.
Interesting story structure, here the first two thirds of the book is comprised of chapters that alternate between the past and the present day. And so the reader is able to follow the paths taken by Lenny and Julien as their story unfolds; we can see just how the relationship develops from the time when they were quite young. Once we're brought up to speed, the final third of the book focuses on the present day entirely.

I don't have much to say about the story, but I thought it was very sweet (in a good way!); I quite enjoyed it. I'm glad I read it, and will happily recommend it.
I have loved this author's previous work, but this one was slightly different. It takes place in Germany, a setting I do not like, and uses German phrases and words I do not know. Unlike New Zealand slang, which is in my dictionary, German words are not.
Even more disturbing was the fact that this story jumps around in time. I sometimes was not sure when an episode was taking place and I often lost track of who and when somewhere was supposed to be.
Despite these difficulties, it was a sweet love story with one party being more reluctant than the other to accept it, a common theme for this author. It involves four people (3 whom are related to each other) growing up together and starting adulthood.
You know how it will all turn out, but it is fun getting there, despite the language and temporal obstacles. This author conveys emotion in her stories so well, and that is what I like best about her.
Of course, once again, I couldn't sleep because I HAD to read another one of Ms. Sunday's wonderful books. This one, like Rock, kept me guessing if the two long time boyhood friends would find their forever love. At first I thought the notion the love interests were first cousins would freak me out, but it didn't at all. It added to the sweetness of the story. I really enjoyed this read and can't wait to download yet another richly constructed Anyta Sunday book!
This M/M romance does not work for me.
It is not the random grammar mishap nor the occasional clumsy turn of phrase. Neither is it the sole/soul word-play that is ingenious but constantly fails to move me.
The German setting feels unnecessary not just because most of the chararacters' first names sound English but also because it is meaningless for the plot which could actually take place anywhere else with little need for changes.

The real problem for me is that the characters fail to come alive.
Ms Sunday works very hard to give them background, depth and feelings the reader can relate to but in the end they still feel distant and somewhat cold.

The split timelines -one chapter is set in the present, one in the past- only works until the two narrations are separated by several years. When the past timeline comes to be set in 2008 or later (the present one is in 2013) things get confused and confusing and this does nothing to improve things.
Technically flawed are also the flashbacks toward the end of the book that suddenly see Caro and Ben as POV bearers. They are unprecedented and therefore stylistically out of place as they add little or nothing to the book.
I first got this when it was still called "Lenny For Your Thoughts," and I eventually saw that it was renamed and edited. The title wasn't updated automatically, so I had to contact to get it done. I definitely regret the decision, because there's no way to revert back to the original. My biggest issue is that the chapter transitions became totally messed up when the book got reorganized chronologically, and the flow is completely lost. Example the last line of the first chapter is "Turned out he would, but not for another twelve years..." The next chapter? One year later. In the original version, the backward and forward jumps are logical and purposeful, but in the revised edition, you're left wondering what the heck is going on. That confusion continues throughout most of the book.

The story itself is enjoyable, with both serious and funny moments and characters who are flawed but likeable. You totally want to cheer on Lenny and Julian, even though their relationship is "icky" (Lenny's words to Julian). Their journey from childhood to adulthood is filled with drama and emotions, and it's especially touching to see Julian's struggles with balancing his love for Lenny and his mother's approval. Oma is absolutely awesome - you definitely know she's a woman you don't want to cross. She's also kind, loving, and funny, and someone who doesn't miss anything. Both Ben (best friend) and Caro (sister) are hilarious, and Nick-the-Dick and Herr Koch added some excitement too.

I wish I had kept Lenny For Your Thoughts on at least one of my devices instead of updating them all, since I thought it was written better than this version (albeit with errors). Whatever content updates could've been done within the original framework and made a good story even better. Neither the updated title nor the restructured story were good decisions, which is unfortunate for this formerly 4.5 star story (and I really like Anyta Sunday's books).
