The author served on an aerial reconnaissance crew in the Strategic Air Command from 1963 through 1970. Their missions, known colloquially as “ferret” sorties, were flown around the periphery of the Communist Block countries. The early part of the period the author discusses was in the years immediately following the Cuban Missile Crisis, a time of heightened tension between the Soviet Union and the United States. Their missions were frequently routine in nature, often interesting but occasionally tragic.
This is the story of life as a reconnaissance air crew member during that period. It includes descriptions of broader policy perspectives as well as anecdotal incidents. The book targets those with an interest in military affairs but is detailed enough that those with little background in military affairs might be able to put themselves in the shoes of a reconnaissance crew member in the time period.
A Raven, in this context, is an Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO). EWOs were the eyes and ears that justified placing a military aircraft and its crew in harm’s way.

I chose this book because I am interested in the history of the US military and especially the Air Force. Author Perrizo speaks from the position of being a real flying warrior. He flew these missions. So unlike many wanna-be military authors Perrizo tell the tales from a man who was there and did that! He starts with the most detailed account I have ever read of the AF Aviation Cadet program. Then he takes us factually through his career as an Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO), flight training, survival school, combat crew certification, in-your-head-dark-spy-vs-spy missions, and life at the end. This book is a flight historians treasure chest.
One can be glad there were men like Perrizo, with steely thinking that could ferret out the enemy in the way of the EWO Ravens.
Wow what harrowing missions, that lasted hours on end. Thank's to Perrizo we now know some of the rest of the story of the Cold War.
A great story written by one of the crewmen of the electronic recon aircraft during the Cold War.
Excellent book on the Cold War, the unknown efforts of men and their aircraft to keep America ahead of the other side.

Very complete overview, but too much repetition.
I flew with Jack Perrizo in the 55th SRW during the Sixties. Mission , aircraft and location revelations are similar to my own. VERY DANGEROUS WORK.
